VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd is a state-owned, non-profit research organization under the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. It conducts applied research in areas such as bio- and circular economy, digitalization, and smart manufacturing to support innovation, industrial renewal, and evidence-based policy. VTT collaborates with companies, public sector bodies, and research institutions both locally and internationally, participating actively in EU projects and international networks. It has accredited laboratories and test environments for industrial-scale piloting. Headquartered in Espoo, VTT has sites across Finland and employs over 2,000 professionals. 
 

Role in the project
VTT coordinates the BIOMAPS project (WP1), acting as the main liaison between the European Commission and the project consortium. This includes ensuring effective communication, goal alignment, and smooth collaboration among partners.  In addition to coordination, VTT plays a key scientific role across several work packages. In WP2, VTT develops microbial production hosts for polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), focusing on genetic modifications to improve efficiency and material properties. VTT contributes its plastics manufacturing expertise in WP5 to adapt various technologies for processing vitrimerized PHAs. In WP6, VTT leads the development of modelling tools and predictive design strategies for PHA-based vitrimers to support scalable manufacturing.  Finally, in WP7, VTT explores sustainable end-of-life strategies for PHAs, including recycling and biodegradation, supporting the project’s circular bioeconomy goals.
